Discuss Shakespeare’s Use of Language and its Dramatic Effects Within Act 3 Scene 2

Within this scene Shakespeare uses emotive and dramatic language to evoke Claudio’s emotions
towards death. Shakespeare uses the modal verb “ I will” as well as the simile “encounter darkness
as a bride and hug it in mine arms” to convey Claudio’s dramatic courage towards his upcoming
death, then subsequently his after-life. The modal verb however is ironic, as it depicts Claudio as a
strong, powerful and demanding character whom is in control of his after-life, however Claudio is
helpless within this scenario and weirdly within a misogynist setting, Isabella, a female lead within
the play, has more influence over Claudio’s destiny than Claudio himself, consequently heightening
the tension of Isabella’s decision. Additionally, the simile associates sex (and marriage) with death by
comparing dying to a woman losing her virginity on her wedding night and turns death into an erotic
state. This reveals more about Claudio’s character and perhaps deep lust and love for Juliet, that
even when he is supposedly thinking about death, he pictures Juliet. Thus the audience may be more
sympathetic towards him as his love towards Juliet was his downfall, yet still imagines their future
despite the lack of hope.
