A Doll's House Themes
That I haven' t considered before and other
themes
,Fatherhood
• Krogstad’s drive- “fight for my little job at the
bank as I would fight for my life” (p.46)-
responsibility to his children
• “My sons are growing up: for their sake, I must try
to regain what respectability I can (p.46)
• Helmer may preach that K- "poisoning his own
children with lies and pretences" (p.54)
• Krogstad remarks that the Helmers do not care
about his children- shows he is not as insensitive
as the play makes him out to be- "my children"
• Helmer- never calls his children "mine"- always
"the children" or "your [Nora's] children"
, Love and Marriage
• Nora and Torvald appear happy, even to themselves-
Nora talks lovingly about her husband and Torvald
gives her pet names
• Contrast Krogstad and Mrs Linde who are long lost
lovers and married out of necessity= both unhappy
• “You see Torvald is so terribly in love with me that he
says he wants me all to himself” (pg. 58)-comes off
affectionate and extremely controlling towards Nora
• “Now Dr Rank, cheer up. You’ll see tomorrow how
nicely I can dance. And you can pretend I’m doing it just
for you---and for Torvald as well, of course.”(pg. 66)-
Nora is playing with Rank’s feelings towards her
unknowingly and believes it is “horrid” (pg. 68) that he
confesses to her in the same act
