Nur 321- Herbal TherapiesBlack cohosh - ANS-Taken to treat symptoms of menopause including hot flashes,
vaginal dryness, palpitations, depression, irritability, and sleep disturbances.
Should not be taken to reduce hot flashes caused by medications.
Black cohosh ADR - ANS-Can cause liver inflammation/ failure.
Coenzyme 10 - ANS-Taken to improve heart function, increases liver enzymes but has
not been shown to cause liver damage.
Coenzyme Q-10 ADRs - ANS-· Antagonizes effects of warfarin. (make the blood more
likely to clot)
Do not give to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers!
Comfrey - ANS-used topically (to soothe skin) and orally (for digestive issues). Topical
use is safe, but oral use can cause liver damage. May also cause cancer.(topical okay,
oral not okay)
garlic - ANS-Taken to improve cardiovascular health. May lower blood pressure and
decrease rate of atherosclerosis but does not appear to lower LDL cholesterol. May
cause GI upset in some clients.
Garlic ADRs - ANS-Increase risk of bleeding
Gingko - ANS-· Taken to improve age-related memory impairment and dementia.
Limited evidence for helping dementia.
Has been shown to increase pain free walking distance in client with peripheral arterial
disease.
Ginko ADRs - ANS-Can increase risk of bleeding and seizures.
Glucosamine/Chondroitin - ANS-osteoarthritis (joints hydrated and suppresses
inflammation)
Glucosamine/Chondroitin ADRs - ANS-Can increase risk of bleeding. Avoid in clients
with shellfish allergy.
