arts presenters - ANS-people who present the show/present the art, symphonic opera

collective bargaining - ANS-when managements work together to get a specific deal
done, includes Labor Union
(labor has a connection to management where they have to listen if labor force is in
agreement about a given topic)
-ie: 40 hours work week/child labor laws
Local unions - ANS-unions composed of members in a specified local area, annual
dues, work dues, each union has it's own jurisdiction
National unions - ANS-pay membership fee, one time due, initiation fee
Music Union specifics - ANS-Employment based,

signatory companies - ANS-Signed agreement with guild or union to hire their people.
Has rules of how you treat members. Advantages: Minimal negotiations, bigger talent
pool. Must hire union members but can hire non-union only if they treat them the same
and they join within 30 days. Paid set minimum
Values of collective bargaining - ANS-Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTV)
Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTV) - ANS-pool of money that is collected and sits in
a fund until used to pay for live music,
, -all performers must be union members, pay 1/2 of fee to play and the Trust Fund will
cover the rest

American Federation of Musicians - ANS-for the US and Canada, collects money and
distributes it to MPTF, performers pay the other half. Includes instrumentalists,
conductors, writers. Does NOT include music composition and singers
Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)
- ANS-union for people that use their voice, represents about 160,000 people (actors,
announcers, broadcast. journalists, dancers, etc.)
American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) - ANS-A union representing opera singers,
solo musical performers and ballet dancers. Mostly nonprofit
American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) - ANS-typically for people who'd perform in
Vegas (magicians, street performers, comedy shows, theme parks, circus performers)
Draw - ANS-how many people would come to a specific event at a specific time at a
specific place for a specific price
Flat fee arrangement - ANS-play for $500, get $500
Percentage of Ticket Sales - ANS-Percentage of profit from tickets. (50% of door sales)
Flat fee plus percentage of door - ANS-$1000 PLUS 50% of door sales AFTER $60,000
Expenses: - ANS-Fees to acts, costs of contract riders, ticket printing and distribution,
box office accounting, facility rental, security, production construction and rentals,
production personnel, Insurance, promotion and advertising, first aid, etc, etc,
etc...Contract arrangements specify how ticket income is accounted for.
Kill fee - ANS-amount of money agreed upon at he beginning in case the concert is
cancelled by no fault of the performer
Are concert promotion contracts as simple as mere performance agreements? -
