accepting of other cultures. More accepting because the people rejected by New

Southern Colonies and West Indies - ANS-Grew staple crops like sugar and cotton,
used a lot of slave labor, and Africans Usually made up the majority of the population.

Pueblo Revolt - ANS-Rebellion by Native Americans in Southwest America. Spanish
wanted to end non-Christian practices by natives, so the Pueblos rebelled, and got rid of
Spanish for 10 years. Spanish regained control and started to accept the Native

Enlightenment - ANS-Focuses on reason and intelligence, and it questions forms of
government such as monarchies and democracies. Focused on individuals. John Locke
and Montesquieu influenced the Framers of the Constitution. Three Branches of
government and consent of governed. (Period 2)

Mercantilism - ANS-Focused on making money for mother country and trading with
Britain only. (Period 2)

Salutary Neglect - ANS-British trend of not enforcing policies in the colonies. Britain
stopped using this trend after the seven years war, and started enforcing taxes to pay
back war debt. Colonists resisted the new taxes. (Period 3)

Stamp Act - ANS-Caused colonists to boycott this act, and because of that Britain
repealed it, and issued the Declaratory act stating they could do whatever they wanted
in the Colonies. (Period 3)

Declaration of Independence - ANS-Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, John
Adams, and Benjamin Franklin. Inspired by Common Sense and Enlightenment thinkers
like Locke and Montesquieu. Was a list of grievances against King George III. (Period 3)

Revolution - ANS-Even though Britain was better financially and militarily, the US won
because of support from France and a strong commitment from the rebels. France gave
aid after the Battle of Saratoga. (Period 3)

Articles of Confederation - ANS-Created a very weak central government that could not
tax or make a military. Very weak because most Americans at the time were afraid of an
oppressive government like Britain. (Period 3)

Northwest Land Ordinance - ANS-Created process for admitting states into the Union,
and outlawed slavery in Northwest Territory. (Period 3)

Constitution - ANS-Based on Federalism and Separation of Powers, no branch could
abuse its rights. Came about from a series of compromises. Did not address Slavery.
(Period 3)

Great Compromise - ANS-Created bicameral legislature, one house based on
population (HoR) other has equal state representation (Senate). Combined New Jersey
and Virginia Plans. (Period 3)

3/5 Compromise - ANS-One slave counted as 3/5 of a person for population, giving
southern states an advantage in the HoR. (Period 3)
