APUSH Unit 3America and Regional Culture - Explain the continuities and changes in American
culture from 1754 to 1800. - ANS-Culturally, America became divided by much more
than simple ideology. The practice of slavery began to sew seeds of civil discourse
which would shape the future of the country.
On gaining independence from Britain, Americans instantly gained a very strong sense
of cultural identity and purpose.
Continued efforts at rebellion signified the national cultural movement toward standing
up for people's rights.
Minorities took a stance against persecution, although these attempts often resulted in
violence and death.
Religious and cultural identities became separated by the idea of superiority throughout
the country.
Native Americans were continuously forced from their homes, which led to their
increasing involvement in American conflicts.

Explain the continuities and changes in regional attitudes about slavery as it expanded
from 1754 to 1800. - ANS-The idea that women should become more educated began
to form. After the war Americans felt that to maintain their society they needed an
educated populus and women were the primary educators. While a woman's purpose
was still just seen as educating their sons, it was still a small step forward. Many women
were still confined to the model of the Protestant housewife however.
With the American Revolution in place democracy was encouraged and became a
staple of American patriotism.
Slavery grew and became a large part of American society and the economy as little
was done to challenge it after the American Revolution. Increased reliance on slavery
grew the Southern economy and the American economy transformed as a whole after
the end of British mercantilism.
, American ideas of liberty and independence led to the desire to expand westward, and
thus into conflict with native Americans, with war and displacement being common
outcomes.
After American independence some states like Massachusetts, Vermont, and New
Hampshire abolished slavery all together. Southern states did not share this attitude
however and the number of slaves in the United States increased dramatically.
The north experienced slow emancipation while Southern plantations only further
encouraged slavery and societal inequality. Especially with the invention of the cotton
gin slavery in the south only continued to grow while. Some states eventually even had
a larger slave population than white population.
Many northern states however turned away from servitude and slavery and towards
immigrant labor instead towards the end of the 18th century.

Wealthy merchants dominated social life in seaport cities.
Artisans and shopkeepers' families were considered middle rank (made up ½ of the
population).
Skilled workers made sufficient living to maintain modest comfort.
Laboring men and women formed the lowest ranks.
Slaves and servants made up 30% of the workforce.

Lord Dunmore's Proclamation promised freedom to slaves if they ran away from their
masters and created a regiment that fought for the king. → High number of former
slaves joined British force→ Washington changes position and freed slaves could join
the Continental Army; in most states slaves could not be recruited, but black and white
soldiers fought together on one side
