PUBH 101 Exam 2
What do proteins do for your body? - ANS-Form muscle, bone, enzymes, hormones,
and cell membranes
What do fats do for your body? - ANS-Most concentrated source of energy - stored,
usable energy that provides insulation for your body, and helps support and cushion
your organs. Helps your body during rest and light activity
What do carbs do for your body? What are simple vs. complex carbs and name one
example of each? - ANS-Supply energy for the body's cells:
Simple - 1 or 2 sugar units; table sugar, fruit sugar, honey, malt, and milk sugar
Complex- multiple sugar units; starches and dietary fiber (grains, legumes, tubers, and
fiber)
What is glycemic index? - ANS-A measure of how ingestion of a particular food affects
our blood glucose levels
What is a dietary fiber? - ANS-Nondigestible carb that is present naturally in plants
Soluble-delays stomach emptying, reduces absorption of cholesterol
Insoluble - helps prevent constipation and other digestive disorders
There are 13 vitamins that we need. Name the 2 groups they are divided into and the
vitamins in each group - ANS-Fat-soluble - A, D, E, and K

allergy - reaction of body's immune system to a food or food ingredient
Food intolerance - problem dealing w/ the metabolism of certain foods
What is physical fitness? - ANS-Set of physical attributes that allows the body to
respond or adapt to the demands and stress of physical effort
,There are 5 health-related components of fitness. - ANS-Cardiorespiratory endurance -
ability of the heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to working muscles for a sustained
activity
Muscle strength - amount of force a muscle can produce w/ a single maximum effort
Muscular endurance - ability of a muscle to resist fatigue and sustain a given level of
muscle tension
Flexibility - ability to move the joints through their full range of motion
Body composition - amount of fat-free mass vs body fat
What is the difference between physical activity and exercise? - ANS-Physical activity -
any body movement carried out by skeletal muscles that requires energy
Exercise - planned, structured, repetitive movement of the body intended to improve or
maintain physical fitness
Every exercise program should include 3 specific activities. - ANS-Aerobics - for the
heart
Strength training - forces the muscles to work
Flexibility training - for the joints
Why do you always warm-up and cool-down? - ANS-To avoid injury and to return the
body to normal
What is the purpose of the R.I.C.E. acronym and what does each letter stand for? -
ANS-Care for muscle and joint injuries that may occur
Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate
There are 3 methods to determine healthy weight. Name them and explain them. -
ANS-Body composition - proportion of fat and fat-free mass in the body
Body mass index (BMI) - weight should be proportional to height
Body fat distribution - location of fat on the body
According to the National Institutes of Health, what is considered to be a healthy BMI? -
ANS-Between 18.5 and 24.9
Your body fat distribution can list you as an apple or a pear. Where is the fat located for

There are many contributing factors as to why the American population is gaining so
much weight. Logically, think and tell me the top two reasons why this is happening. -
ANS-Fast food meals and increased portion sizes
What is the difference between energy (calorie) density foods and nutrient dense foods?
- ANS-Energy (calorie) density foods - refers to the number of calories in a food. Usually
higher calories = higher energy density = higher rates of obesity
Nutrient dense foods - low in calories and higher in nutrients, more volume and bulk, but
fewer calories
If you want to adopt a healthy lifestyle so you can successfully manage your weight,
