Overall, person- centred approaches in health, social care and childcare settings support the
building of positive relationships. This is because providing person- centred care to service
users helps to develop mutual respect on both parts (the service user and employees).
Whilst workers are confident in the service theyprovide (upholding the dignity and privacy
of their patients),patients build a level of respect for whoever is looking after them. This
means that the service users trust employees looking after them and in doing what is best
for them64. During my placement at St Catherines Catholic Primary school, I saw
professionals working with the early years (year 1) demonstrating person- centred care
through having specialised resources in order to support a child’s learning development.
Child X in a year one classroom had autism, so the teacher in the classroom had an assistant
working closely with that student, making sure that child X understood clearly what was
happening in the setting. Since child X was a visual learner, the classroom assistant used
picture cards as a tool in helping him understand clearly what was happening in the
classroom setting. For example, when it was breaktime, the assistant teacher would place a
picture of a child tying their shoelaces at the door in front of child X and also use verbal
communication in lettinng him know that he had to change into his outdoor shoes in order
to go out for breakime. Through using picture cards and verbal communication, the child
was supported in having his individual learning needs met. The positive impact here was
interraction beween the child and teacher, as well as other students being promoted. Child
X had found a way to speak to his other classmates through using his picture cards in
requesting that they do an activiy together.
