Task 1: Final deadline- 10/10/2018
1.1. P1: Describe career opportunities within different industries in travel and tourism sector
In this assignment I will be briefly describing a few different career opportunities that are available in
the tourism industry.
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) the tourism industry is very big and diverse
when it comes to its sectors. The 7 main major areas of it are:
Airlines/ Transport
Events, conferences and exhibitions
Arts and culture
Accommodation, food & beverage
Eco-tourism
Outdoor recreation
Ancillary services such as car hire etc.
Accommodation sector: The Accommodation sector includes; hotels, guest houses, hostels,
apartments or B&B’s where people can stay over for 1 night or more. There are many career
opportunities in the accommodation sector and on top of that is easy to progress onto them starting
from low. For example, a job role as a hotel receptionist which requires the employee to meet and
greet customers, check them in and out, take care of any queries from customers via face-to-face or
by telephone contact the progression career opportunities for a hotel receptionist are that they can
progress onto being a Night, or Head receptionist. Night or head receptionist positions require more
effort and responsibility for example the Head receptionist responsibilities may require to organise
rotas, make reservations, perform cash handling in the correct way and ensure that all reception
staff maintain high level of customer service.
Another job role available for progression in the accommodation sector is e.g. A hotel manager
which manages and keeps the operations and daily procedures of a hotel. A hotel manager is already
a high progression job role but it can be progressed onto being a Hotel manager for e.g. another
hotel so hotel managers can operate and look after a few hotels in the same chain or even have their
own hotel.
One more job role in the accommodation sector could be a housekeeper which is responsible to
clean all the roos and main areas of the accommodation such as corridors, bathrooms, rooms,
lobby’s and kitchens. A job role as a housekeeper can be progressed onto being a Head of
housekeeping, housekeeping supervisor staff for the company or a higher graded hotel.
Airport & Airlines: In the Airport and airlines sector there are endless job opportunities for
progression. The sector is a system of transportation and is part of the aviation industry too. For
example, a role of an air hostess which is to provide exceptional customer service and ensure
customer safety throughout the flight by demonstrating safety procedures, helping out nervous or
anxious passengers and serving drinks and meals. The role of an airhostess can be progressed onto
becoming a Head of Cabin Crew, flight attendant manager being able to transferred to a long-haul
airline which could allow the air hostess precept more work opportunities.
