(P3) There are many methods to conduct research, especially those methods
used in Health and Social care. Research methods are divided into 2 groups,
Qualitative and Quantitative. Some types of research methods used in health
and social care are observations, surveys, experiments as well as interviews.
Qualitative research methods can include interviews. Interviews are a very
common form of research method that is used which is mainly done through one
to one conversations. During this interview, the researcher will ask questions
relevant to their hypothesis or questions. These questions can range from being
personal questions or open questions about opinions and thoughts on certain
things. Interviews can be found in many places ranging from social media
platforms such as YouTube or even Tv shows such as Good Morning Britain.
Qualitative studies look for themes when doing their research and the hypothesis
is usually formed after the data is collected instead of before it. Qualitative
studies can be used for literature reviews where several studies are looked at on
a certain topic and the goal is to identify common themes and present this as
the research. Qualitative studies can be found in journals for example the
journal of midwifery and woman’s health, nursing times etc
Quantitative research methods can include surveys. Surveys are the most
common method used to collect data for research and is the most convenient as
it is mostly done anonymously. In surveys, the researcher will come up with a
set of questions with multiple choice answers to their questions, which will most
likely to be relating to their hypothesis or question. These survey questions can
range from numbers to basic answers such as “on a scale of 1-10” or even
“strongly agree/disagree” type of answers. Surveys can be found almost
everywhere from the members of public or even websites such as your local
school or college or even websites such as pop ups or links forwarded by friends
or family. Survey results can be analysed on excel to look for the mean, median
etc. Survey results might show a correlation between two variables such as age
and self esteem and can show a positive correlation negation correlation etc.
Survey results like frequencies can be plotted in graphs to make results of
research more visually appealing and easier to understanding
For my research, I believe the most appropriate research method to analyse
results for my project is the quantitative method as I will be using surveys to
collect my data. This is because of students being busy in lessons so using
surveys will be less time consuming for them and they will feel like I am not
invading their privacy. I will be conducting this research in my college, which a
lot of students attend, so any qualitative method won’t be of much use as if I
decided to use the interview method, I will have to conduct over 20 interviews
which is really time consuming for me and the students so using a survey I can
gather data more quickly. I believe when dealing with a large group of people, it
is more appropriate to use quantitative methods as it makes everything easier
and more convenient for me and the people involved in my research. Using
surveys will not only benefit me but also benefit my fellow peers as filling out
surveys won’t take as much time as an interview. I also believe with the time
