Group presentation on research paper for BI53030
Today we are going to go through the cell cycle and discuss the paper you are going to analyse for
your assessment.

Paper: Cyclin: A protein specified by maternal mRNA in sea urchin eggs that is destroyed at each
cleavage section. Time Hunt (1983)

Cell division: during cell division the cell goes into anaphase, however, cyclin B needs to be degraded
before this can happen. Otherwise, these chromosomes cannot pull apart. Some cyclins happen at
different stages of the cycle, for example those who regulate S phase.

Cell division cycle: from the moment cell divides a new cell is born. The length of cell times vary,
yeast takes 2-3 hours, human cells take 24 hours.

Video of live cells (Metaphase to anaphase).

Experiments undertaken by Masui – during these experiments they used an oocyte taken in M phase
and G2 and drove it into a mitosis promoting factor (MPF)

1) Injected progesterone to drive it into mitosis 1.
2) Took a sample from the cell and injected it into the cytoplasm.
3) This pushed the cell into MPF.

Oscillations of MPF occur whenever there is cell division.

Discovery of cyclin (1976) Hunt. Protein synthesis in clam oocytes
One of the most important figures looks at clam oocyte eggs at different stages of division. They
follow the appearance of cleavage plates and look at the presence of different proteins. B is the
abundance of proteins not degraded at the end of the cycle. As the cells grow, you have a linear
growth of most proteins. However, some proteins appear and disappear in each cell cycle (B). If you
look at cell division it coincides with the abundance of cyclin B, indicating there is a relationship
between the two.

You need lots of cyclin B and MPF complex, until the cyclin B has been synthesised and is degraded,
this will happen once we have equal tension from each pole. This will instantly give us anaphase.
The paper goes into detail on the technicalities of it, different stages, questions, and the cell cycle.

In your presentation make sure you highlight the important figures and discuss their meaning.
