What is health literacy? - ANS-The degree to which individuals have the capacity to
obtain, process, and understand basic health information needed to make appropriate
health decisions.
Low health literacy is more prevalent in:
- Older adults
- Minorities
- low socioeconomic status
- Medically underserved people
What are the three levels of prevention? - ANS-- Primary (think disease avoidance) -
prevent disease and harm before it occurrs
Teach classes, give education
- Secondary- screening and early detection
This is not stopping, catching early before complications
Look at lab results/screening
- Tertiary- implemented after a disease is found, attempts to prevent
complications/disability
Minimize damage/effects of disease
Disease is present and evident
What are health indicators? - ANS-standard statistics that are used to measure and
compare health status (Mortality rates, disease prevalence, activity level, obesity,
substance use)
, What do community nurses do? - ANS-Determine community health by examining the
degree to which the community's needs are met. A community health nurse is one who
practices in the community (health departments, community health clinic).
What is a community? - ANS-A group of people and institutions that share geographic ,
civic, and/or social parameters.
Public Health Nursing Roles - ANS-- Interacting and establishing contracts with
community partners serving the community at large
- Witnessing the interaction between community programs and the response of the
client to the services

What is the primary care system's role? - ANS-First level, delivered in a variety of
community settings (urgent-care, physician's office, ect)
What is the public health system's role? - ANS-Mandate through laws developed by the
nation, state, or local level. (mandated immunizations for school, local water supply
monitoring)
What is the federal system's role? - ANS-US Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS). (Administering programs like Medicaid, addressing national emergencies).
Describe public health infrastructure - ANS-Provides the necessary foundation for all
public health services (ex:vaccinations, disease prevention programs). A strong
infrastructure includes a capable and qualified workforce, up-to-date data and
information systems, and agencies that can assess and respond to public health needs.
What is cultural awareness? - ANS-- A self examination and in-depth exploration of
one's own biases, stereotypes, and prejudices that influence behavior
Nurses should be able to:
-Learn about their client's cultures
-Understand how their behavior may affect their relationship with clients of other
cultures.
-Understand the concept of health is different across cultures, and they may view
medicine differently
