The failure to contain communism south Vietnam by 1963 was the result of Kennedy policies at oftKennedy's policies had contributed in various ways to the failure to contain communism in South
Vietnam. For instance, the introduction of strategic hamlet (Feb 1959) had been widely unpopular in
which the Southern vietnamese people had been forceable relocated into these (16,000 by 1963)
horrible condition villages in order to ‘ferret out the hord core communst’ however in reality in had
increased the support for the communst regime through the alienation of the southern vietnam
citizen. Other policies Kennedy had implanted in causing the alienation of Vietnam people and the
distarous condition of those people could be seen agent orange , in which over the 8 years 100
million pounds of herbicides had been used to destroy crops and wildlife which initially aim had
been to cause the starving peasants into move into areas of diem government and instead it ha had
caused opposition to increase through the hugely increased NLF support and opposition to the
didem regime. However it could be argued Kennedy was dealing with a situation which he had
inherited and over which he had little control and over he had little control , the administration tried
to get diem to introduce more economicic and social reform but with little success. Kennedy
encouraged Diem to carry out land reforms to address issues of land distribution and landlessness.
Land reform aimed to provide rural peasants with land and a stake in their country, thus reducing
support for the communist insurgency. Instead opposition grw
It wasn’t just his policies it could be argued Kennedy ideological approach to Vietnam contributed to
communism growth in the South . For example Kennedy had been widely accepted the domino
theory and instead of communism spreading in Se asia he had felt he had intervene through
containing communism by implementing puppet leader through Diem. But what h
supported widely unpopular repressive leadership as seen with his support in Diem. For instance
Kennedy had had provided Diem with advisors in support of the government stability through the
government in order to stop communism to spread amongst the peasants through sending 16,000
military advisors by the late of 1963 in order contain the NLF and stop it spreading . This best can be
seen with the 20 mile motorway used for military use
