Declaration of Sentiments - ANS-Drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, which was
modeled after the Declaration of Independence, and was a statement of principles and
a list of injustices that resulted in women's oppression.
Daughters of Bilitis - ANS-The first lesbian civil rights organization in the US. While the
first one opened in San Fransisco, they opened up chapters all over the US. They were
initially functioning as more of a social club where lesbians could meet and interact
safely, it quickly grew into an activist organization. They created The Ladder, the first
nationally distributed lesbian publication which became an important source of
information for lesbians across the country and created a sense of community.
Abolitionism - ANS-This played a large part in the women's movement in the mid 1800s.
Women drew parallels to the oppression of slaves to their own oppression, and fought
to end slavery as well. After witnessing the horrors and injustices of slavery, the Grimke
sisters argued that just like people of color, "we as women have no legislative power to
overthrow the system," they are both powerless in the government to make change.
Originally united both black and white women to fight together, but eventually white
middle class women overpowered and pushed away women of color because they
believed their struggles were "race struggles". Ida B. Wells and Mary Ann Shadd Cary
were prominent leaders in the abolitionist movement and the women's rights movement,
speakers and authors.
Social Constructionism - ANS-Theory that our knowledge of gender, race, class,
sexuality, ethnicity, body size, ability, religion, and nationality are tied to social processes
and therefore constantly being created and recreated by human beings within specific
cultural contexts.
Postfeminism - ANS-How everyday people assume that gender equality and justice has
