Resting Heart Rate Protocol - ANS-sit in comfortable char with arm supported and feet
flat on floor ~5 mins
Stethoscope, radial or carotid artery palpation
15 second count with first beat as 0
read RHR to nearest beat in 15 s - multiply by 4 = BPM
RHR = 99 BPM or less - proceed
RHR > 99 BPM - ask client to sit quietly for additional 5 minutes and repeat
RHR still > 99 - do not proceed with active assessments & refer to physician
Resting Blood Pressure - ANS-the force of blood against the walls of the arteries
created by the heart as it pumps blood to the body
Systolic BP - first perception of sound
Diastolic BP - sounds cease
same body position as resting HR
SBP 144 mmHg or less & DBP 94 mmHg or less - proceed
SBP > 144 mmHg and/or DBP > 94 mmHg ask client to sit quietly for additional 5 mins
and repeat, if still above limit do not proceed and refer to physician
