Suspicions of abuse
when you suspect Harm or abuse has occurred to an individual.
Disclosures
when an individual tells you through their behaviour, that they have been, or are being,
abused.
What is abuse
Causing abuse or neglect to a person by inflicting harm, or failing to prevent harm.
Physical abuse of adults definition
hitting, slapping, pushing, misuse of medication, restraint or inappropriate physical sanctions
Physical abuse of children definition
hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning, burning, or scalding, drowning, suffocating or otherwise
causing physical harm to a child.
Sexual abuse of children definition
Forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities.
Sexual abuse of Adults definition
sexual acts to which the adult has not consented or was pressured into consenting.
Emotional abuse of children definition
Persistent emotional maltreatment of a child that causes severe adverse effects on the
child's emotional development. ("making fun of", deliberately silencing them, making them
feel worthless)

threats of harm or abandonment, humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, verbal abuse
and isolation

Many forms of abuse and includes treating a person less favourably.
Exploitation/ mate crime
manipulating someone for profit or personal gain often when the abuser pretends to be their
friend.
Signs to recognise: Physical abuse (Name 10)
Unexplained injuries finger marks, bruises, black eyes, fractures, brakes, cuts, scratches,
bite or slap marks, burns, weight loss.
Signs to recognise: Sexual abuse (Name 5)
bleeding around the genital area, Inconsistence, pregnancy, blood on clothing, unexplained
stomach pains and cramps.
Signs to recognise: Neglect (Name 8)
Poor personal hygiene, malnourishment, dehydration, dirty surroundings, development of
pressure sores, untreated medical conditions, repeated falls.
