Traditional Interview Questions
Why Medicine?
-Spark: Growing up skiing, running, and biking with my father. With sudden debilitating
arthritis, he no longer could participate in the activities he loved. Received surgery, and was
now able to rejoin family on bike rides with his recumbent bike.
-Theme: providing a patient with solutions to help them regain their dignity and livelihood.
-started in PT, saw the value of consistent treatment, was curious about physicians
-worked as a scribe where I saw a physician treat appendicitis, perform wound debridement,
and order tests to evaluate for a stroke. I was amazed by the unique level of expertise they
had, and was motivated to pursue a career as a physician.
-Now, in my third year working as a medical assistant, I am not only watching the work of
physicians but rooming patients, taking vitals, and getting to be a part of their care. I am
frustrated that there is not more I can do for these patients, and want an education where I
can become a physician who is a leader and can direct care comprehensively.

Tell me about yourself
I am someone who is community driven

- I grew up in Portland, OR in a suburban neighborhood. The community was everything- We
helped each other with yard work & yard sales.
Every Friday we met outside on camping chairs and sat in the middle of the culdesac.
- provided support, a strong sense of community, and collaboration

-in Seattle, my community has broadened.
-specifically, unhoused folks - volunteer at the shelter, Ruby- extreme bias that these
individuals face
- face increased rates of violence, substance use, and mental health conditions while
paradoxically struggling to access health care resources

-also, as an MA- working with LGBTQ population
- anal dysplasia, HIV, HPV
- Monkey Pox, advocate for vaccine and information
- population is now at risk for further stigma and bias

Physically active, love the outdoors/skiing. Been a runner since middle school and finished
my first marathon last year!

Why University of Arizona- Phoenix?
Through the school's website and after talking with current U of A students, I am very excited
about the opportunities it presents.

-The students who I've talked to rave about UA's consistent request for feedback in their
curriculum and about the opportunity to have early clinical experiences at the 9 different
hospital systems affiliated with UA. Both are things that will enrich my experience.

I believe that I align with UofAs goal of having a pioneering spirit- with the motivation to
make positive change and solve problems.

-UA's four-year Scholarly Project.
-During undergrad, I developed a cross-sectional study among college students that
indicated fourth-year students had double the Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk factors
when compared to first-year students. Unsettled by the rapid increase in risk, I am eager to
continue researching CVD through the Scholarly Project that UA offers.
-I am astounded by the cardiovascular research performed by Taben Hale, PhD, and would
love to work alongside her in research and in her mission to inspire women in STEM
careers.

- CVD remains the number one killer of North Americans
- the goal is to improve the health and longevity of north Americans younger than us
- long term goal: novel treatment strategy to slow and reverse changes that are happening in
the heart to maintain and preserve cardiac function

-From my experience volunteering at a shelter for those experiencing homelessness, I am
inspired to continue serving this community as a physician. At UA, I would be excited to
participate in the Service and Community Health - Certificate of Distinction where I can
further develop my understanding of social determinants of health, health equity, and care of
underserved populations. I also am excited by UA's Community Health Initiative - Phoenix
and want to participate in the student-run clinic at the Wesley Community and Health Center.
I believe an education at UA would allow me to become the informed, community-based
physician I want to be.

Taben Hale, PhD
The Hale lab investigates the mechanisms involved in the pathological remodeling of the
heart, vasculature, and erectile tissue that underlie heart failure and sexual dysfunction. In
addition, we are examining the role that prenatal stress plays in predisposing individuals to
cardiovascular disease and sexual dysfunction in adulthood.

, The long-term goal of our work is to develop novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of
these two conditions.

- causes and consequences of hypertensive heart diseases
- CVD remains the number one killer of North Americans
- the goal is to improve the health and longevity of north Americans younger than us
- long term goal: novel treatment strategy to slow and reverse changes that are happening in
the heart to maintain and preserve cardiac function

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
-Working in physical medicine and rehabilitation
-keeping people active
-preventative care
-reaching the elderly with prevention and treatments that increase their mobility
-home visits

-continue working with those experiencing homelessness, volunteering in mobile clinics, and
a leader in the field advocating for statutes that increase access to phone and virtual
appointments and messaging services.

-having ran the Boston Marathon, be a dog owner

How has COVID 19 impacted you?
-onset end of my senior year
-suddenly, i lost my source of income as a medical scribe in the ED. I could no longer
volunteer for Hospice of Spokane and was sad that I would not be able to say goodbye to
my patients.
-was able to regain a sense of community through volunteering for a non-contact food
distribution service

-I saw how my own family struggled as my uncle underwent chemotherapy. He had to go to
his appointments alone and was isolated.

- I saw how those experiencing homelessness with covid symptoms were turned away at the
shelter i volunteered at. Already troubled with lack of housing, they now had to deal with
COVID without a safe place to stay.

While I had my own struggles, my true pain came from the impact that covid had on the
chronically-ill and unhoused populations.
