SONNET 29
Two lovers that are physically separated, they long to be together. Both share
a strong attraction, the woman is directly addressing the man she loves.
-longing,desire,passion,intimacy
In the first line of the poem, the poet presents ideas of a strong and intimate
relationship shared between her and her partner. When describing the
thoughts she has of her partner, she compares them to “wild vines, about a
tree” which depicts her thoughts as strong and uncontrollable. The use of
natural imagery suggests the poet believes loving her partner is natural and
the further comparison of “wild vines” makes us believe her thoughts of him
are able to grow and evolve on their own. This gives the reader the idea that,
no matter what she tries, her thoughts of him are always around and rather
they get stronger over time. Furthermore, the use of natural imagery could
highlight the poet’s feelings towards her partner and the thoughts she has of
them, suggesting they’re beautiful and rather fascinating. After discussing
her thoughts, the poet explains how they’re “about a tree” which could be a
metaphor describing her partner. This highlights her partner as a sturdy and
reliable source of support in which she and her thoughts of him are able to
grow and evolve around, giving us the impression he is almost life sustaining
for her. Perhaps the poet presents this idea in the first line of the poem to
immediately convey the strength and intensity of her feelings and the
passion shared between her and her partner.
Further down the poem, the poet appears to be overwhelmed and perhaps
pressured by her feelings towards her partner. She comments on the
“struggling green” which “hides the wood” suggesting she’s worried her
thoughts will completely engulf her partner, turning him into something he is
not. It is clear the poet idolises and admires her partner very much, however,
it’s gotten to the point her mind has begun to hide the reality of him and
rather manipulate it into something that seems more perfect and ideal. She
seems to worry that she may no longer be able to see past the false version
of her partner that she’s created through her thoughts and to the real version
of him. This creates a strong sense of worry and anxiety for the reader as the
poet seems to have concerns she will be disappointed by the real him, after
living on the thoughts she had created for so long. Perhaps the poet uses this
idea to present the importance of physical intimacy as she seems to believe
their relationship may struggle without it.
