L1 - introduction to conformity

Conformity refers to change in person’s behavior or opinions as a result of real or
imagine pressure from a person or a group of people

This is because each group have their own social norms and unspoken rules on how people
should act - when a person conforms they begin to follow the social norms of a larger group

Kelman(1958) identified 3 different types of conformity :

● compliance
● Identification
● Internalisation

Compliance = shallowest levels of conformity

● where you go along with the group to fit in even though privately their views are not
accepted
● Involves changes to a person’s behavior publicly to fit in with the group
● Temporary short term change usually due to normative social influence (fitting in).
Revert to our true beliefs once the pressure has been relieved or stopped.

Identification = moderate level of conformity

● Conformity occurs as a person sees something they value in a group
● Individual also may not privately believe everything group stands for
● when an individual values something in a group - so they adopt an attitude / behaviour
as correct because they want to be associated with a particular group / person THE
MAIN AIM OF ALL OF THIS IS TO BE LIKED

Internalisation = deepest level of conformity

● When the behaviour /belief of the majority is accepted by the indidvual and become a
part of their own belief
● Usually a long term permanent change often the result of informational social influence -
conformity here occurs without any conscious effort

● E.g. if a person influence by a religious group and converts to the faith, they change their
whole lifestyle + continue conformity without presence of said group
