L4 - Variation of milgram’s study

Conducted variation in order to investigate the impact the level of obedience

Proximity : found that the distance to the learner and the experimenter has affected the
obedience levels

1. the experimenter gave orders over the phone = less likely to obey + resists order because
they are not face to face = obedience dropped to 20.5%

2. Teacher is in the same room as the learner = obedience dropped to 40%

3. Teacher had to put hand of the learner onto the shock plate the obedience level drops to 30%
compared to 65% in original study

bring awareness of how the shocks are affecting mr Wallace - see the consequence of
their actions

Moral strain - state of mental discomfort / anxiety experienced by a person in the agentic state
when a person’s actions conflict with their personal morality

Location : location of where the order is given adds legitimacy of authority to authority figure

E.g. prestigious location such as Yale indicates the presence of the persons authority so in
original study 65% obedience

But in variation where they moved the location to abandoned building / office block it dropped to
47.5% from its original 65%

Uniform : helps indicate the legitimacy of authority figure by showing how high up the hierarchy
they are - the more status = more legitimate = the more agentic shift

Original experimenter was dressed in a lab coat symbolising his authority and power

In variation, the experimenter is called away and someone in ordinary clothes walks in and
continues the experiment the same way. Obedience dropped to 20%

Evaluation:

P: research support
E: Bickman conducted a field experiment where investigated the legitimacy of uniform - 3
confederates dressed in suits, milkman, security guard asked pedestrians in New York to not
walk in a certain direction , pick up trash , pay for parking meters.
E: Found that 19 % obey in a suit 14% in milkman and 38% in guard uniform
