(a) What is the political view of The Sun? [1]

(c) Explain two ways that The Sun is aimed at the audience you have identified. [4]
One way is through the use of easy-to-understand language. This is supported by the reading
age of 8. The sun uses language that can be easily interpreted and won’t require a highly
educated person to understand their stories.
Another way is through the use of sports articles. The Use of huge football sections on the
back of the newspaper entices a male audience as men are typically known to be attracted to
sports.
(d) Explain why audiences read The Sun. Refer to the Uses and Gratifications theory in your
response. [12]
One reason is for information and entertainment (surveillance). Many readers turn to The Sun
to gather news and stay informed about current events. The tabloid presents news in a
sensational, attention grabbing manner providing a good mix of serious news and celebrity
gossip which can cater the desire for information and entertainment. This also conforms to
‘Escapism’ being a reason for people to read the sun. The wide range of stories appeals to a
large audience therefore offering these big audiences a chance to escape reality.
