Natural disasters

A natural disaster is an event or a circumstance that causes damage to
infrastructure or causes harm, death to tourists. Examples of natural
disasters are hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, avalanches, earthquakes,
tornados, volcanic eruptions, Forest fires and droughts. Natural disasters
in general have a negative impact on the travel and tourism industry
because when it occurs, it makes people afraid to travel because they
see the effect it has on the news and makes them not want to go to that
destination. Natural disasters can damage, airports, hotels and
attractions. This has a negative impact on travel and tourism industry
because tourists can’t go to that destination. Companies can lose money
this way because tourists choose not to come to that destination.

An example of a
natural disaster that
has majorly effected
travel and tourism
industry is Hurricane
Irma. This hurricane
occurred from the 30th
August 2017 – 13th
September 2017. The
hurricane was a
category 5 hurricane.
There were 134
deaths. Hurricane Irma
effected the Gulf of
Mexico, the Caribbean Sea and Florida. It impacts the Bahamas, Cuba
and Florida. It majorly effected tourism because around 5.6 million
tourists were evacuated north which the hurricane hit. Attractions have
been close such as Walt Disney magic kingdom, Universal studios, Sea
world and LEGOLAND. Approximately 20 cruise liners have had to
change their itineraries or cancel them all together due to the severity of
the storm as they all have Miami as a port. Popular port destination such
as Anguilla, Barbuda had suffered extensive damage. Hurricane Irma
also majorly effected travel and tourism because it caused over 3000
flights were cancelled coming in and out of Florida.
