Human Reproduction KS3

1. Introduction

Human reproduction is a biological process by which new individual organisms
are produced. It involves the combination of genetic material from two parents
through sexual reproduction. This process is fundamental to the survival of the
species and the inheritance of genetic traits from one generation to the next.

2. The Male Reproductive System

The male reproductive system is designed to produce, store, and deliver sperm to
the female reproductive system. The primary organs involved are the testes, which
are located in the scrotum. The testes produce sperm and the hormone
testosterone, which is crucial for the development of male secondary sexual
characteristics.

Key Parts and Functions:

● Testes: Produce sperm and testosterone. Located in the scrotum to keep
them at a cooler temperature necessary for sperm production.
● Scrotum: Protects and maintains the temperature of the testes.
● Epididymis: Stores and matures sperm cells.
● Vas Deferens: Transports mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
● Seminal Vesicles: Produce seminal fluid that nourishes and helps transport
sperm.
● Prostate Gland: Secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.
● Urethra: Conducts sperm (during ejaculation) and urine (during urination)
out of the body.
● Penis: Delivers sperm into the female reproductive system.

During ejaculation, sperm travel through the vas deferens, mix with fluids from the
seminal vesicles and prostate gland, and are expelled through the urethra and
out of the penis. These fluids nourish the sperm and facilitate their movement.

3. The Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system is designed to produce eggs, facilitate
fertilization, and support the development of a fetus. The ovaries produce eggs
(ova) and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the
menstrual cycle and prepare the body for pregnancy.
