Stop smoking campaign
Aims:
The title of the campaign is ‘Be a fighter, put down the lighter’. The campaign aims to achieve a
change in awareness.
The aims of the campaign are to increase awareness by highlighting the dangers and damage done
by smoking. The campaign aspires to reduce the number of smokers throughout the whole country
and to encourage people to put down the cigarettes. Furthermore, those who won’t/can’t quit
should be encouraged to not smoke around others to protect the general public from passive
smoking. Another aim is to stop young people starting smoking and getting addicted.
Objectives:
I will produce and distribute 200 leaflets around schools which highlight the health problems
smoking can cause. I will reach my target audience of young people who may be encouraged, peer
pressured or influenced into thinking smoking is ‘cool’. I have permission from my head teacher to
distribute these leaflets. I hope to distribute 50 leaflets every day for 4 days.
Justification for choice:
I have chosen to campaign against smoking because smoking is seen as normal within society and
most people tend to ignore it. Young people whose parents smoke may be more likely to start
smoking as they have seen their role models/ parents smoke. Smoking is often perceived as ‘cool’
and is glamorised especially in films. Young people can be heavily influenced by what they see their
favourite celebrities and social media stars doing resulting in young people being influenced and
aspiring to be just like them.
Although society is moving away from the stereotype of smokers being ‘cool’ , more could be done
to stop this.
Target audience:
My target audience is young people. Over 200,00 young people start smoking a year leaving them
open to long term illness’ and effects of smoking. Almost every day, 2500 people under the age of 18
try their first cigarette and more than 400 of them will become regular smokers according to
lung.org. If this trend continues, an estimated 5.6 million of today's youth will become addicted
smokers therefore be at risk from smoking-related diseases.
Methods:
Social media- this is the first method I will use to promote the campaign. The purpose of social
networks being to connect as many people as possible and this fitting with the aim of the campaign
is to raise awareness amongst a larger audience. An advantage of social media is to have a wide
audience and to cheaply reach people to spread awareness about the campaign. There are 1.1 billion
active social media users in the world so the campaign has the possibility of reaching many.
A second advantage is that people can easily share and retweet posts reaching an even further
audience. This is beneficial in spreading awareness.
Merchandise- the purpose of merchandise is to showcase and promote the aims of the campaign. An
advantage of this is that it contains images and logos linked to the campaign spreading publicity.
Additionally, if a person sees another person wearing the merchandise they may be intrigued,
hopefully encouraging them to buy thus increasing the funding for the campaign, once again
increasing publicity.
