[A01] THE ROLE OF PEER REVIEW
• Peer-Review is the process in which specialists assess the scientific works of other specialists in the same
field, to make sure that any research that is intended to be published is accurate and of high quality.
• Before a scientific work is published, it must go under the process of Peer-Review, by specialists in the same
field as the specialists that conducted the scientific work, in order to make sure that the scientific work is of
high quality and is accurate.
• Peer-Reviewing involves a small group of usually 2 or 3 specialists (i.e. ‘peers’) in the same field as the
researcher/author of the research findings, but this Peer-Reviewing-Group of specialists should stay
unknown to the researcher/author of the research findings.
• The Peer-Reviewing-Group of specialists would then analyse the written version of the investigation, and
conduct an objective (i.e. unbiased) review of the investigation.
• The Peer-Reviewing-Group remains anonymous throughout the entire Peer-Reviewing-Process, as this is
more likely to produce more honest reviewing.
MAIN AIMS OF PEER REVIEW :
1. An Aim of the Peer-Review is to decide whether or not to provide Funding for a proposed research
project. The Funding may be provided by any government-run-funding-organisations.
2. Another Aim of the Peer-Review is to ensure that the research is accurate and of high quality. In Peer-
Reviews, all the elements of the research are checked to assess its quality and accuracy, by checking the
formulation of the Hypotheses, the chosen Methodology, the Statistical Tests used, and the final
Conclusions.
3. Another Aim of the Peer-Review is to suggest any improvements or amendments to the research study.
Peer-Reviewers may suggest any changes to the work, to improve the report of the research findings. In
extreme cases, the Peer-Reviewers may conclude that the work is inappropriate for publication and the
work should be withdrawn.
[A03] PEER REVIEW EVALUTATION
STRENGTHS :
• A strength of Peer-Reviewing is that it validates the quality and accuracy of research findings.
This is because an Aim of the Peer-Review is to ensure that the research is accurate and of high quality.
This means that after the research and its findings are Peer-Reviewed, we can be sure that this Aim has been
fulfilled, and therefore the research findings can be trusted.
Suggesting that Peer-Reviewing increases the validity of a study.
• A strength of Peer-Reviewing is that any findings won’t be published until they are at least close to perfect.
This is because an Aim of the Peer-Review is to suggest any improvements and amendments.
This means that after the research and its findings are Peer-Reviewed, we can be sure that these Aims have
been fulfilled, and therefore the findings would only be published until the improvements and amendments
are applied to the research and its findings.
