As the text chapters demonstrate, the settlement of Nevada and its ultimate
acceptance as a state was often linked to external events. Outline how the
Mexican American War, the movement of the Mormons into the West, and the
search for mineral wealth first brought settlers into what is now Nevada.
There have been many different linked external events that have made Nevada the
state that it is today. The Mexican American War was important because of the Treaty
of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1838. This treaty released California, Utah, New Mexico,
Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada to the United States which allowed growth to
the West. The movement of the Mormons into the West also impacted Nevada because
the Mormons began to settle in the Utah Territory, current day Nevada, in 1850. The
Mormons were able to establish a few different territories such as the Las Vegas
Mission in Southern Nevada. Lastly, the search for mineral wealth was also important to
the settlement of Nevada because the "Gold Rush" made people want to settle in the
West territory. The expansion of the Gold Rush established the Western Great Basin
which are current day cities of Carson City, Washoe County, Douglas, and many more.
All of this is a snowball effect into the West becoming a more desired territory to move
to which is a reason that Nevada became the settlement and state that it is today.
What factors contributed to Nevada becoming one of the first western territories
to gain statehood? (Pay particular attention to the efforts of national politicians
such as Senator Doolittle.)
Nevada becomes a state largely due to external national political factors. These factors
are outlined in the text and linked to the Doolittle bill. National Republicans saw Nevada
as a political gain which would support the re-election of Lincoln and provide
congressional votes for the 13th amendment and various Reconstruction policies.
Constitutional exercise (simply identify the correct answer): What are three
conditions for admittance into the Union specifically outlined in the opening
"Ordinance" of the Nevada constitution?
, There are three conditions for admittance into the Union specially outlines in the
opening "Ordinance" of the Nevada constitution. The first one is prohibition of slavery.
This is very important because it clearly established no slavery and no tolerance of it.
The next condition is freedom of religious worship. With there being many different
religions in the state of Nevada from the movement of Mormons to other people's
beliefs, it is important that there is freedom to worship whatever and whoever you
believe in. The last condition is disclaimer of public land. The meaning of this is that
land is owned by the public while federal land belongs to the government.
Discuss how the Nevada constitution provides many of the same specific rights
and liberties as guaranteed by the United States Constitution. Give an example of
how a specific group has been denied full exercise of these rights and liberties in
Nevada. Given an example of how improvement has been noted for a specific
group in terms of achieving full exercise of these rights and liberties.
The Nevada constitution provides many of the same specific rights and liberties as
guaranteed by the United States Constitution. Some of the similar rights are trial by jury,
right to bear arms, freedom of assembly, and free speech and press. An example of a
specific group that has been denied full exercise of these rights and liberties in Nevada
is the Chinese population. This population was had limits against them in immigration to
the United States. In 1959, their employments prohibitions were appealed and in the
1960's and 1970's were able to "freed."
Latinos are the fastest growing minority group in Nevada. What are some of the
reasons suggested in the text as to why the political power of this group has not
matched its size within the general population of the state and even when
compared to the political power exercised by other minority groups?
There are many reasons suggestions throughout the text as to why the political power
of this group has not matches its size within the general population of the state and
even when compared to the political power exercised by other minority groups. One
suggestion regarding this topic is the that the group is still segregated on who is
registered to vote and is involved in politics, and those who are not. Another suggestion
is that they were one of the smaller groups in the state and not have grown to making
Nevada one of the fastest-growing Mexican communities in the country. With that being
