Chapter Summaries:
C1: Story of the Door
Mr Utterson and Mr Enfield come across a run-down door on their Sunday walk.
Enfield describes how he saw a small man trample on a girl early in the morning.
A crowd gathers, demanding Mr Hyde to pay for the damage. He goes through the door, returning
with a cheque paid for by a respectable man. No one believes it is genuine but it is.
Hyde looks deformed but it is difficult to describe.
C2: Search for Mr Hyde
Utterson discovers Dr Jekyll’s will, worried that it will give everything to Hyde.
Dr Lanyon has fallen out with Jekyll over scientific views.
Utterson has two dreams of a faceless figure.
Utterson regularly waits by the door, tracking Hyde. Utterson talks to the irritated and on-edge
Hyde who accuses him of lying about Jekyll talking to Utterson about himself.
Utterson is disgusted by Hyde and worries he is blackmailing Jekyll.
C3: Dr Jekyll was Quite at Ease
A fortnight later, at one of Jekyll’s dinner party, Utterson questions him about Hyde, worried about his
friend.
Jekyll appears disturbed but insists he can be rid of Hyde at any time he wishes.
Jekyll ensures he isn’t being blackmailed and also asks the lawyer to help Hyde if he goes missing.
C4: Painted Faces and Long Hair
Time gap, description of how the boys are living now. Roger throws stones at a littlun but doesn’t hurt
him, remembering the rules of the adult world.
Jack camouflages his face and dances with the hunters, beginning to gain power from the others. Piggy
is now the only boy on the island who is still remotely civilised.
Ralph and Piggy are stunned when a ship passes the island and realize that the hunters have let the fire
out. They argue with the hunters when they return after killing their first pig.
The hunters then re-enact the pig’s capture in a celebratory tribal dance.
C5: Beast from Water
Ralph walks along the beach, thinking about qualities a chief needs and how he can fulfil the role. He
decides to hold an assembly to get everyone to take their responsibilities seriously - including the fire
and hygiene of the boys. He admits that ‘things are breaking up’.
The littluns voice their fears about the beast and it becomes apparent that they are frightened,
especially Percival.
Jack speaks without the conch, deciding to search for the beast with his hunters. He quarrels with Piggy
and Ralph before breaking up the assembly.
The majority of the boys follow him, except for Ralph, Piggy and Simon who are left alone on the beach,
talking about how Jack would be as chief and what grown-ups would do.
C6: Beast from Air
During the night, a dead aircrew member drops down by parachute. Sam and Eric believe they have
seen the beast and run back to camp.
The boys go on a hunt for the beast and discover a part of the island that haven’t seen before.
They are initially scared but then want to build a fort and play in what they call ‘Castle Rock’.
Ralph has to remind them that they must go back and build the fire.
C7: Shadows and Tall Trees
Ralph starts to give up on the idea of ever being rescued. Simon reassures him.
That afternoon, the hunters find boar droppings and Jack suggests they hunt. They track a large boar
and chase it but it escapes.
However, the boys are thrilled with the chase and re-enact it with Robert as the pig, nearly getting
carried away.
Jack and Ralph continue to clash over whether to go to hunt for the beast again.
C8: Gift for the Darkness
Jack calls an assembly with the conch to talk about the beast and claims Ralph is coward should not be
the leader. The other boys refuse to vote Ralph out of power and Jack leaves the group in tears.
Piggy suggests to Ralph that they build another fire on the beach as many older boys leave to join Jack’s
‘tribe’, of which Jack declares himself the chief of.
They kill a sow, leaving the head as an offering to the beast. They steal fire from Ralph’s group and
invite them to the feast.
