M2 Explain how & why those developments, trends and factors are happening and what
effect they are having on the travel and tourism sector using the headings below. You
must demonstrate that you are able to link recent and current developments, trends and
factors to what is happening in the sector today and provide clear explanations with
justifications that should include supporting statistics.
Increased frequency of holidays
Increased frequency of holidays has adapted massively to the travel and tourism industry
because about 5 years ago people would only go on one big holiday a year as people didn’t
have a lot of money then. The one main holiday customers would take would be usually a
holiday abroad and during the summer as that’s when factory workers would get a week or
two off. Any other holidays that they took throughout the year would usually be domestic
holidays for either a short break or visiting family but would never be out of their country.
Today society has allowed holidays to become more and more popular and have become a
lot easier to book and sort out as people can now just do it on the internet or over the
phone as if they don’t have time to go to a travel agents therefore a lot more people are
going away on holidays more frequently also now people are getting a larger income they
can afford it. As more people are going away it has opened up many destinations which
were just small to become a tourist attraction and they have increased their country as a
destinations for visitors to now visit and spend money. In addition, domestic holidays have
also become more popular due to more people and families only wanting short breaks away
in like cabins or caravans. In the last few years society has become better with working
conditions meaning families can go away more as they aren’t coming home ill, another thing
that has changed over the years is that there is a lot more technology which is better for
families who can’t get out to go to a travel agents or is too busy to go to one, technology has
allowed them to do it all online or over the phone. By doing it over the internet lets the
family’s check out the reviews first and can also see if there is anything better. Since all this
technology has come out, families now have more time to spend with each other for leisure
allowing them to start taking more holidays. Now because more people are going on holiday
airports have now been built in regional airports so people don’t have to travel far to go on
holiday also trains have expanded so more people can get on them. Also, more transport
has been put on to get people to different destinations and this would off created a profit
for them companies. This has had a positive effect for the travel and tourism industry
because they are not losing out on any money they are gaining and are getting more and
more customers. Tour operators have got a positive outcome as now they can offer a lot
more range of holidays to customers. Oversea residents made 2.9 million visits to the UK in
January 2017. This had increased from 2016 by 11% but UK residents made 4.6 million visits
abroad in 2017 which had increased by 9% when compared with the year before.
Terrorism
Terrorism is huge in travel and tourism for many reasons. For example on September 11 th
when the 9/11 occurred it had a huge negative effect on both inbound and outbound
tourism. The attack had a negative impact on travel and tourism because people were afraid
of flying and going to America just in case something happened again. Also, people were
afraid of bombs and other terrorist attacks and families wanted to stay home so nothing like
