Hashim4 1,3 Ministry of Science and Technology, Iraq 2,4 Babylon University, Iraq 3E-Mail: engfarhan71@gmail.com 4E-Mail: ahmed_taay@yahoo.com Abstract In this work, samples of pure polystyrene and polys tyrene (PS) doped with wood buckthorn peel (WBP) w ere prepared using casting method .The effect of additi on of wood buckthorn peel (WBP) concentration on op tical properties of poly styrene have been studied in the wavelength range (200-800)nm. The absorption coefficient ,energy gap, refractive index and extin ction coefficient have been determined. The results show that the optical constants change with increase of WBP c oncentration . Key words; polymer , PS, wood buckthorn peel (WBP) , Optical properties, ab sorbance. 1.Introduction Nature, as a best engineer and most ingeniou s designer, gives us a mysterious and economical wo rld. Learning from the nature to solve the problem in ou r life has aroused more and more interests and bion ics has become one of the frontier field of science in the 21st century[1-6]. As well known, amorphous polystyrene (PS) is one of the most comm on plastics in modern chemical industry. A polymer of a particular group is characterized by the molecula r weight of the monomer unit. To study the interactions in the solid state of the polymers of few models have been suggested. One such model treats a polymer as an aggregate of fairly stiff tubes held together in approximately p arallel bundles of forces arising from particle– particle p otentials. The structure of polymers has been relat ed to internal pressure and the same study has been extended to po lystyrene solutions. Some of the interesting proper ties of polystyrene like the Gruneissen parameter, specific heat and bulk modulus have also been reported [7]. Polystyrene (PS) is amorphous polymer with bulky si de groups. General purposes PS are hard, rigid, and transparent at room temperature and glass like ther moplastic material which can be soften and distort under heat. It is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, cyc lohexane and chlorinated hydrocarbons [8]. Many res earchers succeeded to prepare PS as films deposited on vario us substrates such as glass or silicon wafer [9-11] The aim of this work was prepared samples of polystyrene (PS) and polystyrene (PS) doped with (WBP) by using casting method and studied the opti cal properties of them. 2.Experimental Part The polymer was dissolved in distill water b y using magnetic stirrer in mixing process to get homogeneous solution. The weight percentages of woo d buckthorn peel (WBP) are (2, 4 ,6 wt%) were adde d and mixed for 10 minute to get more homogenous solu tion , after which solution was transferred to clea n glass Petri dish of (5.5cm) in diameter placed on plate f orm. The dried film was then removed easily by usin g tweezers clamp. The polymer systems were evaluated spectra p hoto metrically by using UV/160/Shimadzu spectrophotometer. 3.Results & Discussion 3.1 The absorbance of composites Fig(1) shows the relationship between absorbance of PS-WBP composite with wave length, from the figure it was appeared that the absorbance tends to decrease with the wavelength increasing. Journal of Energy Technologies and Policy www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-3232 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0573 (Online) Vol.3, No.5, 2013 57 Fig(2) shows the optical absorption spectrum of com posite for different impurities quantities, it was found that the composite have a low absorption coef ficient at a small photon energy then increase at d ifferent rates dependence on the composite structure. The pu re sample had low absorption coefficient this may be as a result of low crystalinity. Fig (3) and Fig(4) represented the direct transition , the energy gab values dependence in ge neral on the crystal structure of the composites and on the6 arrangement and distribution way of atoms in the cr ystal lattice .
