This course is designed for undergraduate students:

• To develop their basic knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar in
academic writing.
• To advance their competence in using academic language;
• To develop techniques to improve and deal with vocabulary issues
• To relate these closely to the types of task they will need to perform satisfactorily
in their everyday written/spoken course work. To introduce a foundational
understanding of the organization of ideas in common types of academic texts, as
well as the skills needed to communicate effectively to the reader.
• It also looks to develop students’ competence in the use of the expressions and
style typically used in academic writing.

Upon completing this course, students should be able to:

• Develop essential knowledge of the organization of ideas in common
academic texts (e.g. assignments, essays, reports, field notes, research
proposals/projects, abstracts, articles, dissertations, publications:
Postgraduate level).
• Improve the expression of arguments, evidence and stance in academic
writing.
• Develop critical skills for integrating literary ideas into the students’ written
work.
• Use linking words and expressions to achieve cohesion and coherence and to
effectively communicate with the reader.
• Improve students’ academic grammar, vocabulary, phrases, and writing style.
• Avoid frequent students’ lexical and stylistic blunders.
