inflammation of the eyelid. Chronic condition with exacerbations. BILATERAL
condition. If unilateral suspect malignancy.

Factors: seborrheic dermatitis/rosacea

-Blepharitis treatment - -Rule out infection (Staphylococcus aureus). -
erythromycin ointment at bedtime- if the infection is severe tetracycline or
doxycycline oral for 4 weeks.
Eyelid scrubs daily with baby shampoo.
Warm compress.
If recurrent, refer to ophthalmologist.

-Blepharitis follow up - -1-2 weeks

-Cataracts definition - -opacity of the crystalline lens of the eye.
Progressive. Painless. Aging. long term steroid use.

-Cataracts symptoms - -decreased vision. Blurred or foggy vision. Inability
to drive at night

-Cataract treatment - -surgery

-Chalazion definition - -chronic inflammatory lesion due to meibomian tear
gland obstruction on eyelid margins. movable. PAINLESS.

-Chalazion Treatment - -Warm, moist compress 4x a day. I/D if large,
corticosteroid injection by an ophthalmologist.
Follow up in 1 week, then 2 to 4 weeks until resolved. Resolves on its own in
2 to 8 weeks.

-Conjunctivitis - -inflammation of the conjuctiva: VIRAL, BACTERIAL,
ALLERGIC. VIRAL is the most common type.

-BACTERIAL conjunctivitis - -Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus
influenzae, streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria gonorrhoeaa, chlamydia.

-Bacterial conjunctivitis signs/symptoms - -Fast onset of copious purulent
discharge.
