She faced prejudice for marring a white man – who was a fellow writer - in
1979 America.
She writes about their domestic life which may mean this is an
autobiographical poem.
It is set against the arrival of Hurricane Floyd, a powerful storm which hit
the east coast of the USA in 1999.

Irregular rhythm and rhyme scheme mirror the speaker's scattered,
wandering thoughts
Though the continued presence of rhyme and metre suggest the
continuing strength of the couple's love.
