Was known as one of the bloodiest of battles and it was a scene of
fierce fighting in WW1
The name of the poem comes from how the soldiers were ordered to
take cover in Mametz Wood which was the largest area on the
battlefield
Sheers visited the site of the WW1 battlefield which was his inspiration
He grew up in Wales and was very patriotic to Wales; also the soldiers
were Welsh
