Task 1: Identifying and Evaluating Data Sources

A. Educational Problem: Qualitative

One educational problem I have noticed in my five years of teaching 8 th-grade math is

students’ intrinsic motivation. I have struggled to encourage students to complete math

work and give their best effort unless they see a direct reward. I could analyze this

problem through student interviews.

1. Advantage and Disadvantage

One advantage of qualitative data would be that I could identify why

students struggle to find intrinsic motivation in math class. I could also learn rich

detail and elaboration of students’ opinions. One disadvantage to using qualitative

data to evaluate this problem is that the data may be more subjective, sometimes

leading to less reliability. When analyzing the results, there is more room for

human error in interpreting student responses. Since qualitative data generally

uses a smaller sample size, I may not be able to generalize the results.

2. Qualitative data would be appropriate to address this educational problem

because it would help me explore why students do not feel intrinsically motivated

in 8th-grade math. I can ask students to elaborate on their responses and have a

more holistic understanding of the problem. After analyzing the themes, I can

work to increase intrinsic motivation by addressing those themes.
