Required Equipment - Answer -Different pleasure craft are required to carry different
equipment, depending on the type and length of the boat, as defined in the Canadian
Small Vessel Regulations. There are two main categories of pleasure craft in these
regulations:

Human-powered pleasure craft, which include canoes, kayaks, rowboats, paddleboats,
etc.;

Other pleasure craft, which include all motorized vessels as well as sailboats.

Equipment that must be carried onboard a boat is separated into four distinct categories
- lifesaving appliances, boat safety equipment, navigation equipment, and firefighting
equipment.

NOTE: A "power-driven vessel" is any vessel propelled by machinery as described in
the Collision Regulations, rule 3. A "Sailing Vessel" is any vessel under sail that
propelling machinery (if fitted) is not being used. Therefore, a sailboat propelled by a
motor, for instance, is in fact considered a power-driven vessel.

Lifesaving Appliances - Personal Lifesaving Appliances - Answer -Every pleasure craft,
regardless of size, must carry the following equipment onboard:

A PFD or lifejacket for each person onboard (must be of an appropriate size); and

A re-boarding device if the boat has more than 0.5 meters of freeboard; and

Buoyant heaving line at least 15m in length (however, a longer line is required for larger
boats)

Lifesaving Appliances - Human-powered vessels and boats 6m or less in length -
Answer -Must have a buoyant heaving line at least 15m in length.

Lifesaving Appliances - Boats over 6m and up to 9m - Answer -Must have a buoyant
heaving line at least 15m in length; OR

An approved lifebuoy that is attached to a buoyant line at least 15m in length.

heaving line at least 15m in length; AND

An approved lifebuoy that is attached to a buoyant line at least 15m in length.

Lifesaving Appliances - Boats over 12m and up to 24m - Answer -Must have a buoyant
heaving line at least 15m in length; AND

An approved lifebuoy that is either attached to a buoyant line at least 15m in length; OR

That is equipped with a self-igniting light.

Lifesaving Appliances - Boats longer than 24m - Answer -Must have a buoyant heaving
line at least 30m in length;

A lifting harness with appropriate rigging; AND

Two SOLAS-type lifebuoys:

One that is attached to a buoyant line at least 30m in length; and

One that is equipped with a self-igniting light.

Visual Signals - Boats no more than 6m in length - Answer -Must carry a watertight
flashlight; OR

Three Canadian-approved pyrotechnic distress signals (flares), other than smoke
signals.

Visual Signals - Boats over 6m and up to 9m as well as all human-powered vessels that
are over 6m - Answer -Must carry a watertight flashlight; AND

Six Canadian-approved pyrotechnic distress signals (flares), other than smoke signals.

Visual Signals - Boats over 9m - Answer -Must carry a watertight flashlight; AND

Twelve Canadian-approved pyrotechnic distress signals (flares), no more than six of
which are smoke signals.

Exceptions to visual signal requirements - Answer -Visual signals are not required
onboard any boat that is not motorized and 6m or less in length.
