AQA English Literature GCSE – Poetry Anthology
Part 1: Answer Structure
Introduction

Compare the poems in terms of ideas, rather than language methods

Using the question: How do poets present painful relationships in Neutral Tones
and one other poem

3 things:

1. Bring the two poems together

o 'when considering how poets present [painful relationships] in [Neutral
Tones], one also thinks of [Winter Swans].

2. Identify a thematic similarity

o 'both poems explore [the painful heartache that comes from a
relationship that is in trouble]'

3. Identify a thematic di erence

o 'yet, whilst [Neutral Tones concludes with much the same bleakness as it
started],[ Sheers suggests there can be hope and reconciliation]'.

First Poem [Neutral Tones]

4 sections (four quotations to explore and analyse):

Pause and analyse each quote

Use threaded transitions to move between quotes:

 'This sense of [last idea spoken in the previous analysis] is further
suggested/shown/revealed etc. by…'

Second Poem [Winter Swans]

3 sections (three quotations to explore and analyse):

Pause and analyse each quote

Use threaded transitions to move between quotes:

 'This sense of [last idea spoken in the previous analysis] is further
suggested/shown/revealed etc. by…'
