Questions and Answers (100% Pass)

1. Spanish Empire Question: The book describes English colonization
failures in the New World as pathetic, (pitiful) while the Spanish Empire
was "fabulously enriching" Spain. What did the Spanish King do in 1588 to
spark what the book describes as a "showdown" [between England &
Spain]? - Answer✔️✔️-In 1588-yes I said 1588, the King of Spain (Phil 2-
Phillip the 2nd) used some of his fabulous riches to "amass an invincible
armada" (fleet of ships with troops on board) to invade England, kick out
Protestant Queen Liz the 1st, place a Catholic on the throne and make
England great again (Catholic!)

2. Spanish Empire Question: What happened when the big, clumsy and
overloaded Spanish Armada encountered faster, easier to move and skilled
English navy in the English Channel in 1588? - Answer✔️✔️-The English
won! They crushed and then they believe God sent a "Protestant wind"
which drove away the remaining Spanish Catholic armada (fleet of ships)
sent by King Phil 2 of Spain to make England "great" again (Catholic).

3. Spanish Empire Question: What effect did the defeat of the Spanish
Armada have on Spain and on England? - Answer✔️✔️-Spain went into a 3
century "slow decline," but the English Empire in the New World
"flowered"--prospered--"done good!" England came to dominate the seas,
even though Walt Disney makes it look like the Pirates ruled the Ocean.
Johnny Depp is just an actor!

4. Spanish Empire Question: So Spain was nuthin and England was "all
that"? - Answer✔️✔️-No, not really. On page 23, the book says "the Spanish
... [1] had more than a century's head start...[2] were genuine empire
builders and [3] cultural innovators in the New World... [4] their colonial
establishment was larger and richer...and [5] endure[d] a quarter of a
century longer..." In Summary they were first and lasted longer, were also
and empire, were innovative, had more land and money in the New
World! Look at their huge empire on the map!

5. Spanish Empire Question: List some of the colonies Spain had in the
New World, and don't ever forget that they were the first European
colonizers of the New World thanks to Columbus (1492) and the
conquistadors that followed. - Answer✔️✔️-Mexico, as far North as Florida
(St. Augustine), California and Texas, (and other Western states like New
Mexico & Colorado). Their money making colonies were in Central
America, Mexico, the Caribbean and the western 2/3 of South America!
Study a map of their colonies on page ___of the book.

6. Spanish Empire Non-Question: Columbus was a gambler of sorts. He
gambled his and the lives of his men on a guesstimate of the distance to
Asia. We are gambling that pages 130 and 131 which mention the Spanish
over and over will _______ be on the test. After mastering every other
question and answer, it ___________ be a good idea to study pages 130 and
131. - Answer✔️✔️-NOT; WOULD

7. Europeans generally colonized for 3 reasons: Gold, Glory and God. The
English were no exception to this general rule. What do those three words
stand for as far as England is concerned? Start with Gold. - Answer✔️✔️-
Gold: Economic motivation-the Virginia colony of 1607 is an example of
this profit motive for the Virginia Company of London, a joint stock
company which needed to make money off the colony-for its' stock-holders
and for the King. The colonists were threatened with abandonment in the
wilderness if they did not quickly find a way to make a profit. (see page 33)
They found that crappy crop, and we've been stuck with smoking ever
since!

8. Europeans generally colonized for 3 reasons: Gold, Glory and God. The
English were no exception to this general rule. What do those three words
stand for as far as England is concerned? Time for glory. - Answer✔️✔️-
Glory: exploration and colonization made people famous, like Sir Walter
Raleigh (failded Roanoke Colony), Cap'n John Smith (VA Colony), Henry
Hudson, etc... It also brought the "glory" of empire to England's Queens
and Kings!

9. Europeans generally colonized for 3 reasons: Gold, Glory and God. The
English were no exception to this general rule. What do those three words
stand for as far as England is concerned? God is the last of the 3 G's, but He
should be 1st in our hearts. - Answer✔️✔️-The English believed God was on
their side. They wanted to spread the Protestant religion. The Plymouth
colony of 1620 was established for religious freedom. In summary, GOLD,
