Offending Behaviour and
Preparation for Release
P4: Explain the process of receiving and discharging individuals and their property into and
from the custodial environment.
Receiving:
When someone is brought in to custody or given a custodial sentence due to the
judgment of the court the first step is transporting them. This would be done through
particular vans that have been modified to hold prisoners in order to take them to the prison
safe and securely. They do this by having walled areas to separate them from others. This is
to avoid rioting and attempted escapes. If the time is taken to get their covers a mealtime,
then food would be provided. To ensure they would not be a risk of them escaping, they
would be handcuffed as well as having travel with the prisoners so that they can restrain
them if needed. The traveling process would involve no stops and a direct route to the
prison. This would be to get the prisoners to the prison as quickly as possible to avoid the
risk of them escaping since the quicker they arrive the less time they have to escape.
On arrival of the prison, staff members must ensure the identity of the prisoner as
well as explaining why they are there. This is done due to the PVS (Prisoner Verification
System) since it proves eligibility. To do this, a worker would use the prisoner’s proof of
identity and read over what they had done. This is also since it proves their identity.
Alongside this, the prisoner would have to tell them their name and date of birth. This is
followed by getting next of kin information which would be used in case of emergency or to
inform them of their whereabouts in case they are worried. This could also be for security
reasons since they would know it would be them visiting if they visited. Their religion is also
recorded due to how they would be able to provide meals in accordance to their religion as
well as allowing them time to prey. Their fingerprints are also taken as well as a photo. This
will be for security reasons to identify the prisoner when needed. Other steps they take are
asking their preferred language since some maybe speak it.
Before anything else progresses then the prisoners will need to be searched
thoroughly. Searches are performed for many reasons one of them being security. They are
effective for security since searches can assure no items that be harmful to others are taken
within the prison walls. This would lower the risk of someone rebelling or an attack. It also
searches for mobiles or items that could be used to contact someone outside the prison
which is important to monitor as if they contacted a gang member, the security of the prison
at risk. Another reason searches are important is because of drugs. The searches that are
performed are the ‘pat-down searches’ which involves an officer to pat over their clothes to
see if they have any weapons on them. They also need to walk through a metal detector to
ensure that nothing they had missed was on the person and if something is detected, an
electronic wand is used to locate it. A BOSS chair is also used to see if there are any mobile
devices on them. If they refuse to search then they will be locked in a cell not inside the
prison until they allow a search to be performed.
Aspects within the custodial that have to consider are whether the prisoner was
suicidal or likely to self-harm. This information can be collected from visual evidence of cuts
