Assignment 1
Evaluating the recruitment and selection process of a large business

Intro:
This assignment is about the recruitment and selection process of Tesco. Tesco, which is a
public limited company, was founded by Jack Cohen: an English grocer in 1919, Hackney
east London. Soon later, in 1929 North London he opened the first Tesco store. He was
inspired to open Tesco after he came back from war and set up a market stall to sell
groceries. As of 2022. Tesco has 345,000 employees and over 30 million customers. There
are over 5000 Tesco stores in the UK. By 2035, Tesco hopes to stop using plastic and
encourage more sustainable diets. The name comes from the initials of TE Stockwell, who
was a partner in the firm of tea suppliers, and CO from Jack's surname (1 Tesco.)

P1 Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reasons for their
processes:
Work force planning:
Work force planning is the process of analysing the current work force determining its
future, workforce needs and helping to meet its goals. They do this by looking at the
organisation's objectives, if staff meet the organisation's needs, how much staff they have
and the skills staff have. In order to do this, they need to review the number of staff and
skills of employees they have now and create a plan on what they think will happen in the
future. Tesco does use work force planning as it is a large business that needs to find out if
they need to recruit anyone at all. To help Tesco do this, they use contingency planning as a
method of work force planning. For example, Tesco may need extra staff to serve customers
face to face and put out stock. A company like Tesco needs to plan ahead and recruit staff
due to the company constantly growing. Tesco reviews their staff 4 times a year; they use
workforce planning to help them recruit staff when needed and adjust staffing levels. This
gives Tesco enough time to meet their company's needs, objectives and demands. Not only
do they focus on staff, if their customer audience is growing, they use work force planning
to see if they need to open new stores in certain areas to maintain customer service
standards.

, Recruitment process for Tesco:
Tesco usually advertise jobs through job posters in the store and through job websites such
as indeed or simply via the Tesco website. To apply for a job at Tesco, you will need to sign
up and make an account on their website. The website will advertise any job vacancies
available. Once you’ve signed up, you will have to complete your application which takes a
maximum of 10 minutes. You must upload your CV to your application; ensure it is an up-to-
date version including your previous experience and skills. Once you’ve completed your
application, Tesco's recruitment team will review your application including your CV. Within
2 weeks, Tesco will contact you via email or telephone on whether your successful or not.
Tesco uses both internal and external advertising. They advertise through the radio,
magazines, their website, the internet and put up posters around their store. Job analysis is
used to create the job description and person specification that are required. It considers
the attributes, competencies and tasks. (2 textbook.) Companies such as Tesco always
advertise with job description and person specification. Job description is when employees
are provided with information about the role they’ve applied for, the purpose of the job,
what the job involves, what responsibilities and skills they’ll need and the duties they’ll have
to do. There are many elements of a job description which include; responsibilities- you'll be
given a list on all the people and tasks your responsible for, terms of your job- this will
explain what is involved in your job and the accounts you'll need to take in need, education
and qualifications- the job you’ve applied for will ask you your highest qualifications and
who you report to if you have any complaints, queries or problems. Tesco provides their full
job description for each role on their website whether it's being a customer assistant,
manager, delivery driver or baker. Person specification is a list of requirements that a person
needs to have in order to meet their expectations of the job (3 textbook.) There are many
elements of a person specification which include; previous experience- this shouldn't
discriminate against older and younger employees, personality, hobbies, interests and
qualifications- for example, employers will highlight you need “level 2 education” for the
job. Tesco's personal specification is also included on their website. It states that you need a
pass in your GCSE maths or English, a range of their skills, no criminal convictions, and must
respect their values. Tesco does expect you to complete an application on their website and
upload your CV. A CV allows companies like Tesco to immediately learn everything about
you and see if you have the correct requirements for the job as well as skills best suitable for
the job. A letter of application also known as a cover letter is a letter that an applicant writes
giving them an opportunity to explain why they are best suitable for the job. They should
use Tesco's job description and person specification to help them including their skills and
attributes. Uploading your letter of application Is optional however Tesco highly
recommends you do this. Online recruitment is simply recruiting someone online. This can
be done via social media, websites, email and CV’s. This is a quicker and cheaper way to
apply to a job as it's all done online as it saves time as well as postage costs and is cost
effective. A company like Tesco uses online recruitment where they instruct candidates to
email their CV or upload it to their application. Job centres is a place where people go to get
advice on different benefits and jobs, so companies use job centres to advertise vacancies.
Job centres also offer extra support training for people who are looking for a job. Tesco does
