training needs are, what training and development it offers to its staff and how this has led

Introduction
Tesco was founded in 1919 by jack Cohen who was an English grocer in hackney east
London. As of 2023, Tesco is now a public limited company with 345,000 employees, 5000
stores in the UK and over 30 million customers. Tesco aims to stop using plastic by 2035 and
encourages their customers to have more sustainable diets. The name comes from the
initials of TE Stockwell, who was a partner in the firm of tea suppliers, and CO from Jack's
surname (1 Tesco.) This report will be discussing Tesco's training and development process.
P1- Why Tesco trains its employees
Tesco carries out its training on many different levels. These include strategic, operational,
departmental and individual level.
Strategic:
Tesco trains its employees on a strategic level. This is where a business has a main focus
linked to its aims and objectives. Strategic level includes increased profits, increased
turnover and market leader. Increased profit can be done by making all employees aware of
cost awareness by having them take part in training that explains this and helps staff to
improve it. Being cost aware can help the business increase its profits. It is necessary to train
staff to do this so Tesco doesn’t have to increase product prices and sell more products in
order to increase its profitability. Proving training on this will help Tesco increase its
profitability. Maintaining market leadership helps Tesco maintain customer service by
offering high quality, consistent customer service. Staff need be provided with regular
training on customer service skills as this will help them grow as leaders. Increased turnover
can only be achieved once staff have enough sales training, customer service training and
product knowledge. This will help increase the organisations turnover and will allow staff to
be confident in what they are selling. Therefore, providing training on this will help increase
sales for the business.
Operational:
Health and safety and UK legislation is one important aspect of operational level. Tesco has
a duty of care to keep their staff and customers safe. In order to meet the legal
requirements of health and safety, training is put in place to ensure that health and safety is
done correctly in the workplace. For example, a set team of first aiders will be trained to
protect other staff and customers. They will receive certain training on how to deal with
, emergencies. Uk legislation falls into this as staff also need to be trained on how to operate
within the law. For example, bakers at Tesco will need to follow food safety regulations to
make sure the food they are selling is cooked properly and not harmful to others. Providing
training on this will promote health and safety and keep everyone safe as they are following
the rules put in place to keep them safe. Increased productivity helps staff adopt new ways
of working such as teaching other colleagues how to be more efficient and following new
systems. Providing training on this will make Tesco as a business more advanced and the
employees wont struggle to use new systems as they’ve received the training to help them
with this. New technology is important for all businesses. Tesco needs to use new
technology in order to be innovative. Providing training on this, will ensure that the business
runs smoothly without issues and all employees won't find this difficult as they should
receive the right training to help them use new technology. Job performance and
motivation is important. Managers should speak to employees on what they want as in
what training they want to receive more. This is the appraisal system, and it encourages
employees to give their say on any desires or training needs they have. Providing training on
this will motivate employees to meet their goals and work their hardest.
Departmental:
Departmental level involves having a training plan. Tesco is a big company therefore they
have a lot of sales targets to meet. In order to meet these sales targets, staff need to be
provided with training that gives them specific skills in selling, knowledge of the products
and services they are selling and training on how to approach customers in the right way
such as how to give customers advice and gaining confidence to speak to customers.
Providing training on this will give Tesco a strong brand image due to their knowledgeable
staff. Customer service is key for a business. Tesco is well known for its consistent customer
service. It is important that Tesco receive the right training to gain customer service skills.
These include valuing customers, exceeding customer expectations and listening to
customer feedback. Providing training on this will also give Tesco an excellent brand image
and make them more known for their customer service. This will lead to customer loyalty
and new customers.
Individual:
Individual level includes updating your skills. New job roles happen in all organisations.
Being offered a new job role includes additional responsibilities which includes new
knowledge and skills. Providing training on this will give employees the basic training they
need in order to complete these responsibilities on how to do the job which will allow them
to be successful in the certain job role. New equipment is always introduced to Tesco. Staff
need to be given the right training on how to use this equipment safely and effectively.
Providing training on this will promote a safe work environment and will prevent injuries
from taking place due to staff being knowledge on how to use the equipment safely. New
procedures are often put in place. This can be due to external pressures such as market
forces and legislation or to increase productivity. By providing training on this it will allow
staff to learn the new procedures they need to follow and how they need to follow them.
Tesco always has new products and services. Staff need to be confident in order to sell these
