UNIT 1 - DICTATORSHIP:
Goebbels - Coordinated all propaganda.
Georring - Set up the Gestapo.
Rohm - Leader of the SA, private army. Brownshirts.
Himmler - Leader of the SS. in 1936, he was chief of all German police forces.
Aryan Race - Blonde hair and blue eyes. Ideal race.
Lebensraum - ‘Living space’, Germany need more space and to get this they need to invade.
Reichstag Fire - German parliament on fire and blamed on a dutch communist.
Reichstag Fire Decree - Restricted freedom of press and speech. 4000 communist arrested.
Enabling Act - Allowed Hitler to pass a law without going through the Reichstag.
The SA - During elections, the SA intimidated and threatened voters in order for them to
vote the Nazis out of fear. Night of the Long knives weakened the SA as Rohm died and were
put under Himmler and they became much less influential.
Use of Enabling Act to Remove Opposition: Trade Unions threatened to strike so Nazis
arrested them and many workers were put under the German Labour Front (DAF). They also
arrested 3000 Social Democrats and other parties saw this and shit themselves down.
Eventually, the Nazis were the only party in Germany.
Night of the Long Knives - Causes: Ernst Rohm wanted to take over the army. The SA were
not very much liked by the army and business leaders. Rohm and Non-Nazis were a threat.
Events: Hitler gave the job to the SS to forge evidence of Rohm’s planned takeover, Rohm
was arrested and in total 85 people were killed. Consequences: SA less powerful now, army
felt Hitler chose army over SA so loyalty secured.
