The Dorr War - answer✔The lone exception to the trend toward democratization was Rhode
Island, which required voters to own real estate valued at $134 or rent property for at least $7 per
year. In October 1841, proponents of democratic reform organized a People's Convention, which
drafted a new state constitution. It enfranchised all adult white men while eliminating blacks
entirely. When reformers ratified their constitution in an extralegal referendum and proceeded to
inaugurate Thomas Dorr, President John Tyler dispatched federal troops to the state. The
movement collapsed, and Dorr subsequently served nearly two years in prison for treason. The
Dorr War demonstrated the passions aroused by the continuing exclusion of any group of white
men from voting. And the legislature soon eliminated the property qualification for native-born
men, back as well as white, although it retained it for immigrants until 1888.

By 1840, more than ___ % of adult white men were eligible to vote - answer✔90

Democracy in America - answer✔written in the 1830s by Alexis de Tocqueville, the French
writer who visited the US in the early 1830s. It was a classic account of a society in the midst of
a political transformation. His key insight was that democracy by this time meant far more than
either the right to vote or a particular set of political institutions. It was what scholars call a
"habit of the heart," a culture that encouraged individual initiative, belief in equality, and an
active public sphere.
As written in Noah Webster's American dictionary, by the 1830s, the term "citizen" in America
had become synonymous with the right to ___. - answer✔vote

"information revolution" - answer✔the market revolution and political democracy produced a
large expansion of the public sphere and an explosion in printing sometimes called the
"information revolution." A new style of journalism appealed to a mass audience by emphasizing
sensationalism, crime stores, and exposés of official misconduct. Newspaper accounted for most
postal traffic. The growth of the reading public opened the door for the rise of a new generation
of women writers.

"principle of universal suffrage" - answer✔meant that white males of age constituted the political
nation
