BECOMING A REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER.

MY OWN SKILLS, ATTITUDES AND EXPERIENCE DURING MY PLACEMENT :
Since I have started my placement, I have been able to continuously reflect and improve my own skills
with help from reflective on my own work and being given feedback from the staff in the setting. I have
been able to learn new skills when it comes to working with different age ranges of children, whereas
before I had started this course, I had only had experience working with the children in my family and
children at preschool age. Now, I have been able to work with children aged from 0-5 years 11 months.

I have been able to observe how the staff in the early year’s deals with certain behavior and the
methods that are used to help the children learn. I have then gone onto learn how to better myself as a
practitioner, I have been able to learn how improve my communication skills, showing that I am able to
be a good listener, such as repeating what I have been told to clarify that I have understood and I have
been able to work effectively as part of a team to ensure that both parties understand what is
happening. For example, implementing an activity as a team.

Objectivity, open-minded and being self-critical without negativity:

The skills that I would say that I have are being open minded as within placement as when planning an
activity in setting I am open to new ideas from the staff if they were to suggest new ideas that would
improve it and when it comes to reflecting on my own practice, I can pick up on areas that I would need
to improve without being negative about it. I have this mindset when I am being given feedback from
the staff in the setting about an activity that I have done or when dealing with situations along with any
placement visits. I have picked on how to observe and assess children and what I can do in order to
meet their individual needs and help them to develop into their best self. This skill is very important as it
is the basis of recognizing children’s progression and in what areas that they may need to be given extra
support in. At the beginning of placement, I was still gaining and understanding the knowledge that I
was being taught and putting into practice, from gathering these skills I was able to pick up on
approaches of the other members of staff and in my current placement I was able to pick up on one of
the members of the staff dealing with a child that had additional needs and they weren’t approaching
the child in the correct way and this meant that the child was becoming continuously frustrated, at the
beginning of placement I would not have had this opinion on a situation like, this shows that I have been
able to develop my skills and attitudes during placement from what I have been taught.

At the beginning of placement, I didn’t have any idea how to fully reflect on my own work and my skills
without thinking that what I was doing was wrong and now I have been able to develop my kills and
have a better understanding I am now able to reflect on my work and plans and be critical about what I
could perhaps improve on next time to ensure that I am reaching the best of my ability but also that I
am continuing to challenge the children.

Thinking and analytical skills:

Being able to analyse and think about my own skills is essential to make me a good practitioner. It is
important that I can reflect on my own work and I am happy to be given advice from practitioners that
