Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
Leading the team - Evaluating the effectiveness of my leadership – D2
Through completing this leadership assignment, I can
conclude that I believe I am an effective leader. I ran two
command tasks, both with the mission; to fashion a make-
do rope stretcher, in a pretend scenario where a rock
climber had fallen and broken a leg. The team were
briefed that the casualty needed to be transported safely
and efficiently away from the site of the incident, within a
10 minute time limit. I think I adopted a democratic
leadership style, overlapping with a people-orientated
leadership style, because I knew the task would be
completed more effectively if the team members were motivated and communicative with each other, driven
by each other rather than solely by the task itself. As the team leader, I gave the team their situation and
mission, a way to execute the task, plus their resources and
limitations, before allowing them to proceed. I took a step
back and mostly observed the team, with gentle coaching
where they became stuck, and motivation throughout. This
is because I believe that although a leader should give good
direction, they should not be as heavily involved in the
actual task as the team members. Unlike a real version of
the given scenario, the environment we were working in
was more relaxed, and I could call upon team initiative to
present a challenge to the team rather than strictly guiding
them through every step.
When collecting feedback from the teams regarding my
performance as their team leader, I was given more positive
feedback than negative, supporting my conclusion that I was
an effective leader. Both teams responded that I was well
prepared, knowledgeable in the field of leadership, and that I
had given a clear, well set out brief and debrief - alongside a
successful demonstration of the first few steps of making a
clove hitch rope stretcher. I also received feedback that
although I was not bossy, I was confident; giving good
direction, with the teams completing the task in time on both occasions. Both teams liked the fact that I had
put the stretcher challenge into context; rather than just telling them to fashion a rope stretcher, I gave a
