>There are subtle ways in which both novels depict a feminist society
● In Frankenstein everything goes wrong for the characters due to the lack of
females within their lives; Elizabeth, Justine and Victor’s mother all die, the
Creature is denied a female companion
● Shelley is depicting the problems that occur when you have a world without
women. This is also demonstrated through the act of procreation, the
Creature was created without a woman which is deemed unnatural
❖ In Never Let Me Go, it is the female guardians who hold the most influence
and power, with Miss Emily, Miss Lucy, and Madame being the most
influential
❖ Despite this there doesn’t seem to be any divide between the genders in the
clone’s society, the students are just clones and their is no real division
between the sexes other than biologically
❖ Perhaps this has been put on to the students because of the female
leadership, or maybe because there is no need to push gender norms onto
the students, they all have the same purpose and will do the same job so
there is no need for distinguishing factors between them
❖ Gender stereotypes are based off of nature, the man is the dominant
‘breadwinner’ and the female cares for the children, within the clones society
they will never get the chance to get this life so there’s no point
Consequences
>There is a general consensus in both novels that the consequences of an action
matter (utilitarian school of philosophical thought) and that the consequences of
scientific advancement are often negative
● Frankenstein questions whether it is right to ‘play God’ in an effort to gain
knowledge and make scientific advancements. Is religion and and nature
more significant or is the acquisition of knowledge most important despite the
atrocious consequences that occur
● Victor refuses to create a second creature because he thinks about the
consequences of it, they could procreate and produce more
❖ NLMG questions whether it is right to cause such suffering and to use clones
as a means to an end for the suffering of the majority of the ’normal’
population or should we have left things the way they are and not created
