Unit 9 – IT Project Management
Assignment 2 & 3
Unit introduction:
In this assignment, I will be initiating the project by researching a problem with using my creative skills to
generate a range of solutions. I will also undertake a feasibility study to select an appropriate solution and
outline the requirements of the project. Furthermore, I will be planning and executing to undertake a major
project as part of my BTEC course. Lastly, I will be carrying out the plans that I have made by using an
appropriate methodology to explain and analyze the useful contents and by investigating the benefits and
drawbacks of this methodology.
Initiating the project:
Scenario/ user requirements:
The first requirement would be the participants that are required to enter the tournament as
individuals or as part of a team
The second requirement will be forming into 4 teams with 5 members each and 20 spaces for
individual competitors
The third requirement would be to complete 5 events in each team or individuals
The scenario to initiate the project will include:
Each event that will be defined as a team or individual event
The events will vary in type, from sporting to academic challenges
Individuals and teams will be awarded points according to their rank within each event
The points awarded for each event are yet undecided and the college are willing to hear any
suggestions you may have
Also, the college would like to include the possibility of entering for one event only
Scope of this project:
The scope of this project will cover the application requirements which will require users to record and
store their scores across numerous events. In addition, there will be four teams with at least five members
per team and they will participate in different types of events of either individual or team where possible.
The scoring system will be decided later for each event once they are all finished. However, this will be
recorded to singular events separately.
Input of this project:
The input of this project will be the individuals and four teams with points being awarded from 0 – 5. These
inputs will be the score achieved, team names and users that will be entering their personal details such as
name, surname and date of birth. From this, their records will be saved automatically when they have
finished or have completed one or more events.
Process of this project:
The process of this is that the application will take the input that have been recorded to the system and
then form a calculation to add up the total points earned across all events which will then generate the
number of positions each member will be in. An example of this could be individuals that could receive the
following points that include the following:
, Name: John Atkinson Unit 9 – Learning Aim B/C Date: 20/10/2019
5 points earned from Bowling
3 points earned from Cycling
0 points earned from Golf
2 points earned from Swimming
1 point earned from Wrestling
Subsequently, the total score that will be saved is 11 points that will be displayed by the user of the
application along with other competitors.
Output of this project:
The outputs of the application would be to retrieve the data that have been provided and then producing a
report to display the results that have been revealed by going to the summary section of the application.
Also, the results would be indicating the number of points users earned with their details addressed such as
name, date, address and many more.
Storage of this project:
The application would need to store the data to a back-up location to prevent any corruption or losing any
of the files. Therefore, it would be essential to save data regularly in order to load the data easily and
continue where they left off since the application may suddenly crash and then result with having to restart
the application.
User Interface of this project:
The chosen user interface of the application for the project would highly be graphical user interface (GUI)
as this type of interface is visually instinctive and suitable. This type of user interface will allow users to
utilize quicker and enable users to utilize graphical or appealing buttons/icons whereas the other interface
(which is called Command Line Interface) provides a simple text-based user interface allowing users to view
and manage files but they would have to manually enter the name of the teams or individuals with the
scores being put in place for events that they have contributed in and this would consume time. Therefore,
the best preferable interface will be Graphical User Interface.
Once users have inputted their scores, they should instantly have access to the total scores they have
gained from all the events. Also, there would be no more than two clicks away since there is an option
limitation on the application and would therefore make it simpler and trouble-free.
Timescale & Options for this project:
The timescale for this project would be around spring and summer as most events would usually take place
in these terms. The times would usually be in morning and afternoon from 10:30AM to 17:00 which gives
users enough time to contribute to as many events as possible. Additionally, there will be some planning to
when the actual event will start and what time it will finish.
Project completion duration:
Towards creating my application or project, there will be a timeline to when the event/project application
will be completed and if there are any changes to be made afterwards. From this, I had investigated that it
would take approximately 2 – 3 months which means that this would be taken to December and January
for it to be fully completed.
