Task 2: Exercise Referral process

The aim of exercise referral scheme is for people who may have low moderate level of physical or
mental problems to take part in physical activity that is structured programme that keeps them safe
and helps them to improve participation in sport however to improve their health and wellbeing by
taking up physical activity in structured programme specifically for them.

Once you are referred by the GP (general practitioner) you are entitled to a specialist there for you
will be getting, professional help they’re for they can help you in whatever you have a problem, the
benefits of this that they can help you.

Everybody is entitled in getting specialised treatment, in case you’re GP can’t deal with the problem
themselves there for the GP needs to refer you to a higher state in the department that can deal
with the problem that may not be able to, so that they could help you. For Example, GP could
recognize the problem however will not be able to deal with it because he is not trained for it, so if
you may be obese or have osteoporosis he can’t deal with it so he will refer you to a specialist that
can deal with that type of problem and then they can help you with the problems because they are
trained for this types of situations.

The referral scheme will take a different amount of time and the cost as it depends what problem
the client may have for example if a client is obese hit could take 6 months to go through a process
to lose the weight if someone has mental health problems this may take years to see the results.
Which the cost will be higher as it takes longer than the person that is obese.

The way it is monitored is by going in on checks if you maybe on track with losing weight so in the
hospital they will weigh you and check blood pressure and if you are all good you keep following the
programme and if not then they make changes to improve on it so that you keep on losing weight.
For other health problems, you could be monitored by doing an exam or people checking on you.

There are 5 stages of exercise referral scheme but before I go into this I will talk about why it is
done!

There are many referrals in the hospital that may need critical attention that sport can't help with
such as surgery on the spin this would need a specialist referral that can deal with this type of a
problem, as exercise referral can't be fixed with exercise they're for there is need for different
referrals. However, exercise referral schemes can help people who are having a problem with
obesity, sedentary, cardiac problems, pulmonary disease, arthritis. Osteoporosis and mental health
problems. Sport can help with these types of problems by going through or taking up Sport (physical
activity) as a form of medication as this will help people with their problems as I have motioned
before.

Stage 1: Selection of the patient by GP (general practitioner)

Before anything Happens, the GP is the doctor so when the client comes with problems. The doctor
is going to make their decision on the patient's state to see if they need an exercise referral scheme
by examining them. Only if they are having the problems that I have mentioned at the top such as
obesity or are sedentary etc. They are then being allowed to go through an exercise referral scheme.

However, before all this, the GP must check the client as they must be over the age of 16 in order to
go through referral. This is so that to do exercise potential with groups of people that maybe are full
of adults also as all the referral are based on adults there for anyone below 16 are not allowed to do
it as it will not apply to them.
