- In the absence of oxygen, Krebs cycle, glycolysis
and electron transport chain cannot continue
because all the FAD and NAD will be reduced-
cannot take up H+ ions in Krebs cycle- enzymes
stop working
- Leaves anaerobic process of glycolysis to produce
ATP
- To continue glycolysis, pyruvate and hydrogen
must constantly be removed and NAD must be
regenerated from reduced NAD

Production of ethanol in plants and fungi, and
certain bacteria

- Pyruvate molecule formed at end of glycolysis
loses a molecule of carbon dioxide, accepts
hydrogen atom from reduced NAD to produce
ethanol - pyruvate is reduced

(equation is doubled as 2 molecules of pyruvate)

Production of lactate in animals
- Occurs most commonly in muscles as a result of
strenuous exercise
- Oxygen used up more rapidly than it can be
supplied- oxygen debt occurs
- Essential that muscles continue to work despite
shortage of oxygen

- Each pyruvate molecule produced takes up two
