Unit 1 – Assignment 2

Who can stand for election in the UK?

You can stand as a candidate at a local election as long as you are a British citizen, a member of the
Irish Republic or another member state of the European Union and you must be at least 18 years old
and not have had any criminal charges within in the last 6 years and you also must pay a £500
deposit when you register as a candidate but you only get your deposit back if you get atleast 5% of
votes.

How are they elected ?

The UK is divided into 650 areas called constituencies. During an election everyone eligible to cast a
vote in a constituency selects one candidate to be their MP. The candidate who gets the most votes
becomes the MP for that area until the next election.

Periods of election ?

The maximum term of parliament is 5 years in the UK before the next general election that period
can exceed but by no more than 4 weeks.

How you can vote?

Via Post: In order to vote by post you must a first apply online. You do not need to give a reason for
this unless you live in Northern Island. Voting via post is good if your abroad or away from home.

In Person: This is the most popular way to vote, you will receive a voting card in the post that you
must fill out and take to your local polling station (which is usually your local church or social club)
and submit your vote in the ballot box. It is an illegal offence for anyone to tamper with another
persons vote.

Electronically:

This is when a person votes online instead of doing it in person, this helps encourage people to vote
because its easier than ever since they dont even need to leave their house, this would also be good
for people with disabilities since its ease of access.
