The Five Kingdom System of Classification
• Scientists started classifying living things into distinct groups quite
early on.
• Some biologists divided living things into two categories: plants and
animals. Several biologists, like Carl Woese, Robert Whittaker, and
Ernst Haeckel, tried to create a more comprehensive classification
scheme. Among these, Robert Whittaker's Five Kingdom
Classification was particularly noteworthy and is still in use today.
• Amongst these, the Five Kingdom Classification proposed by Robert
Whittaker stood out and is widely used.
• All organisms are categorised into five kingdoms according to Robert
H. Whittaker's 1969 Five-Kingdom System of Classification.

Features of Five Kingdom System of Classification
According to Whitaker, creatures should be categorised into kingdoms
based on a number of characteristics, including cell structure, method and
source of sustenance, relationships, body organisation, and reproduction.
The kingdoms include:
• Kingdom Monera - Bacteria and archaea
• Kingdom Protista - Algae and protozoa
• Kingdom Fungi - Fungi
• Kingdom Plantae - Plants
• Kingdom Animalia - Animals

Kingdom Monera
• These organisms are prokaryotic and unicellular.
• They do not have a well-defined nucleus and also lack cell
organelles.
